What things could Mushing Canada do?

E-mail Print PDF

There are many ways that a national mushing federation can be useful:

  • Liaise between the international mushing community and the Canadian mushing community.
  • Produce policy and support regional efforts to:
    • Implement junior programs,
    • Organize training groups,
    • Organize competitions and special events,
    • Train/educate officials,
    • Inspire new membership in the community including new members from under-represented groups, as defined by Sport Canada: women, athletes with disabilities, and Aboriginal peoples,
    • Secure adequate trail access,
    • Navigate legal issues related to keeping and running sleddogs.
  • Fund and support Canadians attending international events.
  • Select individuals to participate at international events (i.e. national team selection).

Mushing Canada has attempted to meet some these needs, more or less successfully, at different times since the early 1990s. In time it may be possible to meet all of these needs consistently.  With current resources limited we have chosen to focus on national team selection.
